Families that surf together...

THE Real experts in technology - children - will star for two hours at the conference on November 4. The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre will open its doors (5-7pm) to children (with parents in tow) for a Free Family Technology Night. There will be two 40-minute child-friendly presentations (at 5pm and 6pm) on how to make best use of technology in the home. There will be an introduction to the Internet and email for beginners.

The Scottish Council for Educational Technology (SCET) will give advice on homework support, early-learning software, and using the Internet and online encyclopedias to help with that awkward homework project on the mating habits of slugs. Cendant, the software company sponsoring the evening, will demonstrate its English and maths products that will "redefine the role of technology in education".

"It is basically an information-gathering exercise for families. In the next year, there is going to be a huge explosion of Internet use and we will be giving parents unbiased advice on what to buy," says Bronagh Bell of SCET. "We want to dispel the myths and fear about buying technology."
