Fiona Forbes, active schools co-ordinator in the Kincorth cluster in Aberdeen, finds it difficult to persuade pupils that they need an hour a day of physical activity, such are the lifestyles of the young.
Working between five primaries over the past two years, Ms Forbes - a trained primary teacher and fitness instructor - believes she has made pupils much more aware of activity. Attendance at events and clubs has increased. Dance has gone down well with older girls.
“Children want to do activities but often do not get the opportunities or do not have the transport,” she points out.
“We are not PE teachers,” she adds. “We are merely promoting activity in the wider school, like walking to school and extracurricular activities.”
