I note with incredulity the eating and drinking habits of many students. Given their love of sugary drinks and fatty foods it is no surprise that their work is of a low standard. I do not believe any amount of effective teaching will have an impact unless the receptor is fully receptive and it is proven that a healthy diet improves learning. So why aren’t we doing more?

I agree. Colleges might start by removing soft drink and sweet machines and advocating healthier eating. Canteens could offer a greater choice of vegetables and fruit and much more could be done to encourage students to drink more water. The brain cannot function well if the body is dehydrated and soft drinks do not re-hydrate effectively. FE likes to think it is cutting edge, but is it really? A truly holistic approach to education would include dietary health.
