An associate college of De Montfort University, Leicester, Brooksby Melton College provides courses geared towards the aquatics industry. At entry level, a BTec level 1 (GCSE-equivalent) introductory diploma in land and environment contains two modules relevant to the fish industry. More comprehensive options include a first diploma level 2 in fish husbandry and a national diploma in fish management. College managers also plan to offer a level 3 national award course in fish management and a national certificate this year.

“Hopefully, within the next few years we will be able to offer a full range of diplomas and certificates if we can get numbers up,” says lecturer Richard Pearson.

Class numbers vary, with an average of 15 students on the first diploma and between 20 and 24 enrolled on the national diploma, and student ages range from 16 to 55 years old. The department has close links with the industry, especially with Chester Zoo, and employs three full-time and two part-time members of staff.
