FE sector is flying without a licence

It’s ironic that, just as the Welsh government is proposing to introduce professionally led regulation for FE lecturers in Wales, the UK government has weakened such protection as exists in England and created a “regulatory vacuum” (“They could pose a threat to students, but they are still teaching”, 11 May).

The administration in Cardiff Bay has rightly recognised that increasing collaboration between schools and colleges in catering for 14- to 16-year-olds potentially increases, rather than reduces, the risks to students. It follows logically that this is a time for more, rather than less, protection in the FE sector.

Gary Brace, Chief executive, General Teaching Council for Wales.
