This year’s Edinburgh International Science Festival runs from April 1-10, but the schools programme, Generation Science, is on now until June, so pupils all over Scotland can sample the workshops by scientists and entertainers.
Last week, Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace launched a four-year campaign, with funding from Diageo Scotland, to double the number of primary children who each year take part in the touring programme to 120,000. The Scottish Executive has been the main funder since the programme started 12 years ago. The aim is to give every child access to two of the shows and workshops - there are now 20 touring Scotland - during their primary school years.
Dr Simon Gage, director of the Edinburgh International Science Festival, said: “We want to help teachers make science and technology as inspirational to young people as they can. We need to reach the 1,500 headteachers who don’t yet know about Generation Science and demonstrate to them that it works.”
