Fight red tape

Schools must do more to free themselves from red tape according to an official bureaucracy watchdog.

The Implementation Review Unit says in its annual report that the Department for Education and Skills needs to work "still harder" to make its promise of a more streamlined relatioship with schools a reality.

But the unit, a panel of school staff appointed by the Government to monitor the impact of its policy on schools, also calls on heads to be more assertive about rejecting schemes that do not meet their needs.
