Scientists have made a final plea to Reading university to abandon plans to close its highly-rated physics department, before a decisive meeting tomorrow.

Phillip Diamond, of the Institute of Physics, called the move “hasty” and urged university leaders to reconsider. The university’s council was expected to formalise the decision tomorrow, despite the offer of a pound;75 million rescue package.
