Financial failings put staff jobs on the line

LECTURERS at City College, Norwich, were today meeting their local MP, Education Secretary Charles Clarke, to demand an inquiry into the college's "disastrous financial record of the past five years".

Earlier this week a meeting of more than 100 Natfhe and Unison staff unanimously passed a vote of no confidence in the chair of the corporation and chairs of the staffing and finance committees. Unions fear 40 jobs could go following the issue of redundancy notices to 30 full-time equivalent teaching staff and 10 support staff.

Lecturers' union Natfhe says the prospective job losses are down to mismanagement. "They don't know what they are doing financially," said Natfhe branch officer Andy Cairns. "They are just promoting slash and burn."
