Financial fillip

Having spent several years working as a business manager in the primary and secondary sectors, I was astonished to see that Mick Brookes, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, feels that "every pound spent on a bursar is a pound that could have been spent on the curriculum" ("Cash woes see 'cheap' support staff on the up", May 15). He should know that good bursars and business managers are worth their weight in gold.

They ensure a school's money is spent wisely, with maximum resources available for the curriculum. They access external funding to supplement budgets and liberate much headteacher time to lead the teaching and learning in the school, among other valuable practices. School support staff may be cheap and increasing in numbers, but we are definitely worth every penny.
