Fires in schools cost more than Pounds 55 million last year, yet research by a leading local government insurer, Zurich Municipal, shows that more than a third of schools have below average or poor security and fire prevention measures.
Loss control specialists found that many schools lacked sprinklers and automatic fire alarms; fire doors were in poor condition; combustible fabrics were in walls, roofs and ceilings; visitor monitoring systems were poor; intruder alarms were lacking.
