Eighty families in the Possilpark area of Glasgow have already said that they will use a school breakfast club that opened on Monday. For the rest of this term it will offer cornflakes, toast, fruit and a drink for 45p.

The project, for pupils at Wester Common and Saracen primaries, has brought together several agencies including Greater Glasgow Health Board and the city council. The health board has been influenced by studies in North America and south of the border which show that almost half of children in some urban areas go to school without breakfast.

Research also shows that eating before school can have a positive effect on academic performance as well as pupils’ well-being.

A spokesman for the breakfast club said that the aim is to offer not just a low-cost nutritious start to the day but “a fun place to meet and chat to school friends every morning before school”.
