Sue Bruce, the relatively new education director of East Dunbartonshire, retrieved a handbill from under her windscreen wipers in the car park of Boclair House, council HQ.

It was the day of the savaging by HMI and its potentially prophetic message began: “Redundant, dissatisfied or seeking a change? - we have a fantastic opportunity for ambitious individuals or coupls to earn pound;250-pound;2,000 a month with NO BOSS. Part-time or full-time - you decide - call 0141 626 3651.”

Sublime timing maybe, but Bruce admits it has not got that bad - yet.

Rumours that Gloria Gaynor’s anthem “I Will Survive” has become the department’s theme tune are wide of the mark. It must surely be the alternative, Tina Turner’s “Simply the Best”.
