IT IS a wonderful idea that all post-16 students should study the equivalent of five subjects in Year 12. Like the emperor’s new clothes, however, I believe that there will be no such thing in reality.

Five subjects demand that most students in most post-16 schools will study AS-levels full-time (in our case 45 periods out of 45). Where is time for key skills, PE, personal and social education, RE?

Five subjects is an increase of two-thirds on many students’ existing timetables, demanding an increase of two-thirds in staffing. I see no sign of two-thirds increase in post-16 funding.
