You published on the front page (TESS, August 2) an article reporting speeches I made to the Professional Association of Teachers. Unfortunately, the report seems to have given offence and I would like to make it clear that nowhere in my speech did I use the terms “fix results” or “cheat the system”.

Nor did I name the Scottish Vocational Education Council. Indeed my argument was based upon first principles and, if it was an attack, it was an attack upon a system rather than an organisation.

I objected, on principle, to linking internal assessment with school league tables for reasons which are obvious and, I believe, unexceptionable.
