The national Motorola Be an Inventor challenge was won this week by Netherlee Primary in East Renfrewshire. The P4 pupils won pound;1,000 for their Floodbuster device which stops baths overflowing. When the water level gets too high, out pops the plug.

Second prize (pound;500) went to Shawlands Primary in Glasgow for its “bag-handling wheelchair” to help disabled shoppers and third prize (pound;250) to Auchtertool Primary in Fife for its geothermally heated swimming pool.

A new Motorola award for young inventors, selected by pupils attending the finals at the Glasgow Science Centre, went to St Peter’s Primary in West Dunbartonshire for its solar-powered escape chute for homes.

More than 1,800 children from 80 primary schools in Scotland took part.
