Michael Mitchell looks at an e-journal that should help prepare for a general election

Citizenship e-journal

Perpetuity Press in association with the Politics Association pound;49.99 Published three times a year

The Citizenship e-journal provides a wealth of material to help teachers update and develop their knowledge of the subject. It also provides valuable teaching materials and briefing papers.

Each edition (about 50 pages) includes varied articles from well known individuals in public life and education. The current issue, for example, has contributions from experts such as Michael Meacher, Lord Taverne, and the OCR GCSE chief examiner.

The quality on screen and in a downloaded printed format is excellent.

Content is clearly aimed at the top end of the GCSE and post-16 market; over time I hope the net will be spread more widely across the key stages and ability bands.

The materials and teaching aids are very well structured. Even those articles aimed at the teacher are written with suggestions for use in the classroom and there are references to available teaching materials and websites.

Those familiar with resource material and journals produced by The Politics Association will feel instantly at home with this journal and the teaching resources. It provides very good value for money and should build into an excellent resource base for teachers. It can be paid for with e-learning credits. The first editions have set a very high standard.

With the general election almost certainly in May, the journal shows its pedigree with a lot of background information and teacher support material on elections. The April edition will feature more general election material from all the main political parties and information on self-government in Scotland and Wales.
