It was with joy that I read about Finland (TES, September 19). Children there are taught, “altruism, self-esteem, learning how to learn, interest in literature, maths by way of experience, creative problem-solving, respecting others’ views of life and convictions, nature conservation and respect, personal well-being, movement and expressing oneself musically.”

Compare and contrast that with the latest weighty tome from the Teacher Training Agency outlining the competencies for teachers, with its utilitarian emphasis on planning, monitoring, targets and evaluation. No wonder trainee teachers are crushed by the weight of paperwork.

Welcome to Terminator 4! The cyborgs have finally taken control. “Come wiv me if you want to teach.”
