Are teachers the scruffiest profession?

Whatever the survey on best and worst-dressed professions says, our school looks like a fashion parade. Apart from the only male, who seems to constantly wear PE kit. I agree estate agents look smart, but do they have to do painting and clay work?

Over the last 15 years, I’ve been spat at, bled on, had various varieties of ink either flicked at me or spilled on me, had to deal with the vagaries of chalk, whiteboard markers, glue, vomit, snot, tears and correction fluids - branded and generic. There is no way in the world that I am going to spend vast amounts on a wardrobe for school. Although having said that, my mum’s advice to me was: “If you can’t be good looking, you can at least be well dressed.” Which I often share with kids who are looking shabby.

In my experience, male teachers are better dressed than the females, who seem to think they can wear whatever they like. Woe betide men if they are not in shirt and tie, but the scantily clad female distracting a bunch of horny teenagers from what could have been a French lesson faces no sanction.

I’m trying to set an example to my post-16 students and it appears to be working. I’m proud of myself and proud of them.

Why would I spend a fortune on clothing when I will snag my trousers on the corners of chipped desktops. I teach science so there are chemicals about as well. The set of keys I need to carry to get in and out of the various classrooms, stockrooms, prep rooms etc wears holes in my pocket. If I do break duty, I will be walking around on the back field to catch the smokers.

I spend my day wandering round a large bleak site with an assortment of buildings. In some areas it is warm and cosy with good heating and double glazing. Other bits have useless heating and single glazing. You can be boiling or freezing within a few minutes. My solution is Next trouser suits.
