Young Minds, the children’s mental health charity, has published two booklets entitled ‘Mental Illness in Your Family’and ‘Sexually Abused?’ The first is for 11 to 16-year-olds who have a family member experiencing mental health problems. It explains the different kinds and causes of mental illness and the impact on other family members and gives details of helping organisations. The second booklet encourages children to seek, and believe in, treatment for the difficulties they have experienced. A leaflet for parents, ‘Do you know someone who has been sexually abused?’, explains how to get help for their child. Building Expectations, a teachers’ pack for Years 9-11 comprising video, worksheets and guidance notes, encourages pupils to think about any additional obstacles that might be encountered by people with learning disabilities and to consider how they and others can provide them with support.
