Pupils on free school meals are 2.5 times as likely to be low attaining than others, according to a study. The odds of becoming a low attainer - defined as in the bottom 25 per cent of pupils - at 16 are very small for pupils who have achieved level 4, the expected level, in maths, English and science at 11. The study was carried out by the Department for Education and Skills.
