The four junior school teachers trapped in a partly-built Kuwaiti school and living in accommodation described as “disgusting” have managed to leave the country.
They were given papers allowing them to leave Kuwait hours after enquiries by The TES.
Nine European women had originally taken jobs with the Anglo-Arab Academy, but five left immediately. The four remaining teachers were unable to get the correct documents and were told the cost of the return flight would be deducted from their pay cheques. The Kuwaiti education ministry has now promised to reimburse them.
Meanwhile the Kuwaiti British Schools Group has reacted by “disassociating” itself from the scandal and promising to guarantee minimum standards. “All member schools meet proven high standards of academic resource and staff welfare,” said chairman Graham Hawkins.
The Anglo-Arab Academy said last week that the school was “adequately completed and equipped”.
