Your article on home education last week was a welcome contrast to the bigoted views of Jim “state school is the only way” Towers a few weeks ago.

It is about time the establishment woke up to the fact that variety in education is to the benefit of everyone, with the possible exception of statists like Mr Towers who want to keep citizens in their place.

I for one would not choose to send my child to Summerhill, the local state school, or most private schools - indeed most of these options are prohibitively expensive. I choose to home educate for our family.

However, in any democratic society it is vital to have choice, and I support all these institutions’ right to exist and offer their own unique form of education. It is high time we started recognising the value of having these choices, and that it is the family that should be making them.
