French connection

The rest of England could soon be taking lessons from Tottington primary, Bury, where junior children have been taught French as part of the timetable for the past five years.

All 180 seven to 11-year-olds at the primary school get a 30-minute lesson a week from Year 6 teacher Carole Gardner.

Mike Pinder, headteacher, said: "Our children are enthusiastic about it because it is extremely well taught. We are now looking at ways in which to find a further 30 minutes a week by having a few short follow-up sessions in the classroom during the day."

The Office for Standards in Education praised her excellent teaching and enthusiasm, saying: "French lessons are exciting, proceed at a vibrant pace and engage all the pupils."
