Mrs Hazel Telford is the midday supervisor and much, much more at Broughton primary school near Cockermouth in Cumbria. Headteacher Karen Shankland, who nominated her for our flowers, champagne and chocolates, says: “Hazel helps in whatever way she can.”

The school serves a vibrant community of two villages - Great and Lower Broughton - which hold a carnival every summer and lots of charity events.

Mrs Telford is a great fundraiser and raffle organiser; she knows everyone through the school, the local church (50 yards away) and the Broughton Bears mother and toddler group. Families, Brownie groups and the school all join in the Carnival and the Year 6 leavers play a special part. The theme for this year’s float is still a secret (it was The Wizard of Oz in 2005) and Mrs Telford will help with raising cash, making costumes and getting ready on the big day.

Before this term ends, think of your Friday Hero who always goes the extra mile and send their name to TES Friday or e-mail friday@tes.co.uk. Flowers kindly supplied by Marks and Spencer
