Off to a frying start

The first annual conference of Voice, the re-branded Professional Association of Teachers, will forever be remembered for its hot air.

The organisers, hoping that the first gathering under the new name would go with a swing, had booked the Barcelo Hotel in Daventry, a suitably obscure location for the quirky union. Unfortunately, on Tuesday it turned out to be the only hotel in Northamptonshire without a functioning air conditioning system - on one of the hottest days of the year.

As motions were debated, an attendant was seen frantically stuffing ice- cubes into a rudimentary cooling unit. Lord Adonis, the main speaker, congratulated members on their fortitude as they mopped their sweaty brows.
