Your report (“Private school staff pushed to register”, February 6) gives readers the impression that teacher vetting in independent schools is less rigorous than in maintained schools. This is not the case.
All teachers must go through the same vetting checks before they are given a job in any school. In addition, all teachers are logged with the General Teaching Council once they begin initial teacher training. Indeed, the GTC’s own website states that around one-third of teachers in the independent sector are already registered.
The fact that independent teachers must pay for GTC membership while their state sector counterparts have their registration funded by their local authority is grossly unfair. This must be addressed before teachers are compelled to register.
