Anti-terror guidance for colleges and teachers published

Official advice for tutors, colleges and training providers on how to prevent learners being preyed on by extremists and terror groups has been published.

The Education and Training Foundation (ETF), which runs the newly-launched website, described it as the “go to” site for online training and resources to support the sector in delivering the government's Prevent Duty, which aims to stop people being drawn into terrorism.

It includes information for governors, notes for teaching staff, specific guidance for support staff such as librarians and security staff, and examples of current policies and risk assessments for leaders.

The ETF is also developing an online training module for all FE staff to raise awareness of the Prevent Duty and the need for all providers to “exemplify British values”.

A team from the ETF has visited a number of FE and sixth form colleges, as well as adult education and training providers, to discuss the duty and seek out effective practice.

It said these visits had “highlighted some issues” in the implementation of the duty and British values in “very different” communities.

It has asked Kirklees College to develop more detailed guidance on how to integrate British values into FE.

Olivia Dorricott, director of leadership, management and governance at the ETF, said the new website had had almost 1,000 visits in the first two days.

“Our website has a range of materials to support people from across the sector, including material reflecting effective practice across the sector already, and we will continue to build on and refresh the resources over the coming weeks,” she said.

“We encourage everyone to use, share and feedback on what’s there so we can continue to work with the sector in this important area.”

The Prevent Duty will come into force on July 1. Earlier this month the 157 Group of colleges and the Association of Employment and Learning Providers launched their own toolkit for providers.
