An all-through Gaelic medium school for pupils aged three to 18 has been approved by Glasgow City Council’s ruling Labour group. The authority’s education committee will now consider the plan on Tuesday.

Steven Purcell, the council’s education convener, said that, assuming the plan was passed by the education committee, tendering for the construction and refurbishment of the school on the site of the old Woodside Secondary would begin, with work starting by summer 2005 and the school opening after the summer of 2006.

Councillor Purcell acknowledged that one of the biggest problems was the national shortage of Gaelic-medium secondary teachers. “That is a genuine concern but we want to work with the Gaelic community and the universities to make sure we are expanding available courses and encouraging potential tutors and teachers to come into Gaelic-medium teaching.

“I have also said that, if we can’t find a mathematician speaking Gaelic, then until we can find one pupils will have to learn that subject through English,” he said.

Once fully functioning, the 3-18 school is expected to accommodate up to 200 pupils but it could be expanded if there is greater demand from outwith Glasgow’s boundaries.
