Designing Ourselves Royal Museum, Edinburgh until March 30

A small but fascinating exhibition in the Craft Gallery which looks at the ways people are increasingly using design to enhance, adorn and transform their bodies. “From medical implants to body augmentation, and from branding to scarification, the potential for people to radically alter their own appearance has never been greater,” we are told.

The show looks at perceptions of beauty, the pursuit of perfection and the way designers are trying to create a virtual ideal in characters such as Lara Croft.

Not suitable for young children.

Victorian Childhood Experience David Livingstone Centre, Blantyre until June 2003

These workshops for primary children, which the National Trust for Scotland planned to run for one week last year, proved so popular that they are continuing until June at least. They cover The Schoolroom, where children dress up and sit in the same classroom that mill children were taught in; Home, which includes a look around a one-room Victorian house, having a go at making a rag rug and doing the washing (the hard way!); The Work Place, where they can try spinning and weaving; and a Traditional Games session.
