THE number of young people taking a gap year between school and university has risen by 10 per cent since the introduction of tuition fees. In 1997, the last year before university fees were
introduced, 8 per cent of students deferre entry onto their course for a year. Last year, almost 9 per cent did so.
The figures were revealed by education junior minister Malcolm Wicks in response to a question by John Bercom, Conservative education spokesperson.
