GCSE pupils told avoid Latin

Pupils are being told by teachers to avoid Latin at GCSE because it is too hard, academics at Durham university said.

They found Latin was at least one grade harder than any other subject, and up to three grades more difficult than sociology.

Will Griffiths, director of Cambridge university’s school classics project, said: “It comes down particularly to league tables.”
