Your last issue (TES, July 6) covered the issue of boys’ underachievement. It seems that boys are not buying into the Government’s ideas of what school is about. Good for them.

We all know that far more important learning happens around the edges of formal subjects. Breaktimes are particularly important to children’s development. How could algebra or the periodic table possibly compare?
