Transport is a common theme at KS1. Children could choose the most appropriate method for getting from one place to another, which, on a global scale, will include air.
At KS2 the world’s busiest air routes could be mapped and explained. At KS3 pupils could investigate, with a globe, why aircraft fly over the Poles rather than take what looks like a straight line on a map. It they explore topological maps, drawn according to time taken to fly there, rather than distance, a very different view of the world will emerge.
Tourism is a common topic at KS3 and the impact of cheap air travel on holidays resulting in the decline of the traditional British seaside holiday and the rise of the costas would be an excellent focus for an enquiry. At GCSE and A level, the environmental impact of air transport could be examined.
