The geography programme of study requires pupils to study a range of places and environments in the European Union (PoS 7), although this is often a weak feature of key stage plans.
KS 1-2
Identify the British Isles on a map of Europe, and Europe on a map of the world (PoS 3).
Ask pupils to bring in postcards of places in Europe which they and their friends have visited. Ask and answer questions to describe what these places are like (PoS 1a, 3).
Ask pupils to pack an imaginary suitcase for a holiday in contrasting climatic regions of Europe (PoS 3).
KS3 GCSE
Know the location of the 25 countries that make up the European Union, and their capital cities (PoS 3a).
Investigate a European country in depth (see KS3 scheme of work, Unit 17).
Use the EU as an example of a trading bloc (PoS 6 i iii). “The EU at a glance” http:europa.eu.intabcindex_en.htm provides facts and figures to get you started.
KS5
Investigate the impact the Common Agricultural Policy has had on the rural economy and environment. Begin with an Internet search comparing EUGovernment sites with the views of pressure groups such as Friends of the Earth.
Will the enlargement of the EU result in a flood of economic migrants? Begin by reading “EU migrants unlikely to flood UK” on http:news.bbc.co.uk and search for “European migrants” but follow links to other points of view.
