Without understanding how social, economic and environmental changes affect people, places and regions, we will not equip students with the basis for independent moral judgement.
This remains an essential part of good geography lessons and in the hands of a good teacher, geography undoubtedly opens young minds, and challenges young people to think logically about their place in our complex world.
Pupils will always have opinions; the action plan for geography and curriculum reviews should help all teachers ensure that pupils' opinions are rooted in understanding.
