George and Sam, the book by Guardian journalist Charlotte Moore (pictured) about bringing up her two autistic sons (Penguin), has been shortlisted for the Mind Book of the Year Award for a book that increases understanding of mental health. Also on the list are: Only Human by Susie Boyt (Headline), a novel about a marriage guidance counsellor with troubles of her own; Memory Fitness: a guide for successful aging by Gilles O Einstein and Mark A McDaniel (Yale University Press); The Cruel Mother by Sian Busby (Short Books); The Boy With No Shoes by William Horwood (Headline), a memoir of troubled childhood; and Brainwashing: the science of thought control by Kathleen Taylor (Oxford University Press). The winner is announced on May 18.
