The scottish and UK governments have confirmed their intention to bring together the work of Skills Development Scotland and Jobcentre Plus, as revealed in The TESS on January 16, writes Neil Munro.

As part of its response to the economic downturn, the two governments have agreed to pilot the scheme in Scotland where 80 SDS careers staff will work in job centres. It was launched in Port Glasgow on Monday by Fiona Hyslop, the Education and Lifelong Learning Secretary, and Tony McNulty, the Whitehall Minister of State for Welfare Reform. Earlier, they attended a “summit” in Glasgow of the PACE (Partnership Action for Continuing Employment) initiative, which provides help for employees facing potential redundancy.

Ms Hyslop said it was “a step towards wider integration of employment and skills services, so people get help to get back into work”.
