A cart full of art materials and ideas to help children and adults get the most out of looking at art is the latest acquisition at the City Art Centre in Edinburgh.

Hand-crafted entirely in native hardwoods, such as Scottish elm, ash and chestnut, the cart opens to reveal an intricate collection of shelves and drawers containing hands-on art activities. Commis-sioned from the Workshop of Tim Stead, a small company of bespoke furniture makers, it is supported by the Scottish Museums Council. Activities and worksheets are accessed within the art cart, which has been designed to encourage children to enjoy and explore art, and appreciate colour, form, mood, composition, techniques and materials.

The cart’s emergence coincided with the launch on April 4 of View from the Inside, an exhibition of works depicting interiors, on display until October, admission free.
