Children who enjoy the muddier side of historical research are being urged to take part in national archaeology week.
Museums, heritage sites, archaeological societies and other organisations will hold more than 400 events on July 14-22.
Following in the footsteps of archaeology heroes such as Time Team’s Tony Robinson, children across the country will be able to take part in practice digs and other activities.
They will be able delve into various periods of history, investigate local buildings and landscapes, gain practical skills and learn about artefacts.
The week is being co-ordinated by the Council for British Archaeology and the Young Archaeologists’ Club, supported by English Heritage.
