Girls’ rugby triumph

In late November 2008, a group of 26 girls travelled from the small rural community of Auchterarder, near Perth, to Murrayfield for their first taste of rugby at a development day hosted by the Scottish Women’s Rugby Union. After initial training sessions in January 2009, the team threw itself into the leagues and cup competitions around the circuit. It was the start of a journey that has now seen them crowned Scottish Champions - March 09 winners of the U15 SWRU National Bowl, June 09 winners of the Emirates IRB Sevens at Murrayfield, beating the U15 national champions, December 09 U15 winners of the national Merit Leagues, April 09 winners of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Cup at Murrayfield. It has, says Peter Shore, rugby coach at the community school, been “a meteoric rise and an amazing journey for a group of inexperienced but hugely athletic and talented girls”.
