In-service training courses are not known for reluctance to use jargon. Too many teachers have felt the sand fall through the egg-timers of their lives as they listened in hot seminar rooms to presentations such as “Synthesizing real-world articulation in the classroom”.
The Diary was therefore delighted to learn of a course run by Lancashire county council over the summer called simply: “Managing gits.”
Uncertain if staff were getting tips on managing nasty pupils, parents or perhaps even colleagues, an excited Diary rang the Lancashire English and literacy centre, which ran the course.
Disappointingly, it seems “gits” stands for “guided reading and independent tasks” offering insights into the “rationale and management” of “this sometimes controversial element of the literacy hour.”
