In Glasgow’s George Square, the Christmas lights are already on, and Santa’s Grotto and the skating rink are in full swing, surrounded by traditional German-style Christmas stalls - all signs that the city’s Winterfest (www.winterfestglasgow.com) is underway.

The city’s slogan in the run-up to Christmas is “all wrapped up”, with the aim of entertaining Christmas shoppers, as well as making life easier with late-night opening until 8pm and later (0141 204 4400, www.seeglasgow.com for details; 0845 22 55 121, www.visitscotland.com, to book accommodation, pound;4 fee).

Scotrail is putting on extra trains, and the Buchanan Galleries and the St Enoch Centre are offering almost 3,000 free parking spaces after 5pm throughout December, and there are park-and-ride facilities around the city.

There’s another Christmas market on Argyle Street until December 23. Grab a bite to eat at Fifi and Ally (0141 229 0386, Princes Square, or 0141 226 2286, the new Wellington Street store, www.fifi-and-ally.com), which also sells a cornucopia of gifts and was recently voted Most Stylish Cafe at the Scottish Style Awards 2007.

Remember the spiritual side of Christmas with Carols by Candlelight at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (December 16 and 19) or the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Christmas Concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (December 22) or enjoy the Scottish Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty at the Theatre Royal (until December 29) or Cinderella at the Pavilion Theatre (until January 26).

ABode (0141 572 6000, www.abodehotels.co. ukglasgow) is offering an overnight package for those who want to make a luxurious weekend of it. For pound;199 a night, couples get a bottle of champagne and two-course lunch on check-in, a double room, breakfast and a 2pm check-out the next day as well as a pound;40 voucher to spend in the chic boutiques of Princes Square.

Where to go

I love the West End, especially the bars in Ashton Lane. The People’s Palace on Glasgow Green is a great little museum. The University of Glasgow is a wonderful building and there’s the Rennie Mackintosh House for an Art Lover museum. The transport museum (just down from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery) is also quite good.

Gina, Glasgow

I’d recommend Kelvingrove Art Gallery, if only to see the famous Salvador Dali painting. Totally worth the visit.

Jackie, Carlisle

Where to eat

I stayed in the old hotel in the Central Station and there’s a famous bar called The Horseshoe Bar round the corner where you can have one of the cheapest meals in town.

Paul, Leeds

Where to stay

I love the Moat House hotel, which has a great view of the Clyde and is within walking distance of the centre.
