I am writing to express my disappointment with a report in your November 5 issue - “Heads angered by universities raising entry requirements.”

It claims the University of Glasgow raised its entry requirements during the applications cycle. This is categorically not the case, as I stated to your journalist.

As part of our ongoing review of admissions, the university has increased some entry requirements but this was before the applications process began and all schools were informed of that change.

The article also claimed that students from non-traditional backgrounds would be disadvantaged by the changes. In fact, the University of Glasgow has, for many years, been committed to attracting students from schools where participation in higher education has been traditionally low and this commitment will continue. We are proud that we enable students from all backgrounds to attend one of the best universities in the UK.

Frank Coton, vice-principal learning and teaching, University of Glasgow.
