Jimmy Higgins, the assistant head at Stranraer Academy, has given a whole new meaning to distance learning. For Higgins refuses to budge from the comforts of Barrhead in East Renfrewshire which is some 90 miles from his place of work - and he chooses to commute by car between home and school.

This adds up to some 940 miles a week or 3,760 miles a month, equivalent to a staggering 37,600 miles over a standard 40-week school year. This is not quite as good as it gets: Mrs Higgins also teaches in Stranraer, also commutes . . . and also uses her own car.

We trust that there is a reliable garage service in Barrhead, otherwise supply cover in Stranraer could become somewhat strained.
