The numbers starting teacher training have dropped for the first time in four years, despite lucrative “golden hellos”.

The annual census of trainees, published yesterday by the Training and Development Agency for Schools, shows 39,600 people registered to train this year, down from 41,900 last year. Fewer training places were allocated because of falling pupil rolls.
