The Education Minister had a starring role at last week’s Tory rally at Stewart’s-Melville College in Edinburgh along with his predecessor at the Scottish Office, Eton-educated Lord James Douglas-Hamilton. No assisted place for him.
Tory chairman Annabel Goldie paid a glowing tribute to Lord James, we think. “He is arguably one of the most charming political creatures you would ever want to meet,” Goldie gushed.
Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind was by contrast a “homespun lad”, presumably unlike Lord James. But he was not quite at home. There was no greater display of affection than to “allow a mere Watsonian into these hallowed precincts”, Rifkind confided.
