Thousands of FE learners are sitting, or resitting, GCSE exams this summer. The exam period is expected to be particularly testing for FE colleges, with record numbers of students retaking English and maths GCSEs.

Today, with thousands sitting GCSE maths exams, FE colleges and students took to social media to share their exam experiences.

Last year some colleges were forced to cancel lessons and book external venues in order to free up sufficient space for students to sit their exams. City College Norwich told TES that this year it was holding GCSE English and maths exams at the Royal Norfolk Showground - one of the biggest open-space buildings in Norfolk. More than 1,000 students will sit GCSE English this year - three times the number who sat it two years ago.

The number of  GCSE students aged 17 and over has grown significantly over the past three years. In 2013, more than 140,000 students aged 17 and over sat an English or a maths GCSE. In 2015, this had increased to almost 230,000 students.

Some students, however, felt luck would not be enough.

Can’t believe I have to go into college just to fail my maths GCSE
