Blind and partially sighted children in the UK are losing out on education because of a shortage of textbooks, a study has revealed. The report, published this week by the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB), calls on the Government to act urgently to set up a nationally co-ordinated system for providing schoolbooks for blind and partially sighted children.

At present, only 12 per cent of maths and 8 per cent of science GSCE textbooks in England are available in Braille or large print.

The RNIB has launched the Right to Read declaration in a bid to end the book shortage.
