Governor is a BNP candidate

The Friday magazine cover story which focused on the British National Party in education felt extremely relevant to my school (TES, June 4).

My multi-ethnic school discovered that a parent governor was standing for the BNP in the local election.

Despite race-relations legislation and the school and the local authority’s anti-racist policies, the message we have received as a staff is that it is difficult to shift a governor with beliefs of this kind.

We now find ourselves in the contradictory position of havinga school that celebrates diversity and racial harmony, and a governor who belongs to a party that advocates repatriation and an end to immigration.

The Department for Education and Skills needs to give urgent clarification to schools about the role of parent governors who hold racist views.
